In brief, the Enneagram is a personality typing system that helps you dig into the essence of your being to learn more about your true self. To find out the basics of the Enneagram you can read my post The Enneagram Basics Explained. Today I want to talk all about the Enneagram wings.
What are wings?
Wings are the two adjacent types to your personality type on the Enneagram symbol. Nobody is pure personality type. We are too complex to be one exact thing. One of the two types adjacent to your basic type is called your wing.
Your basic type is what dominates your personality but your wing adds elements to your personality as well. Sometimes even contradictory elements to your basic type.
There are disagreements about whether or not you have 2 wings or if you have one wing. However, the observation of humans has many believing that you may draw from both wings BUT typically you have one dominant wing.
It is important to identify your basic type before diving into finding your wing, as to not misidentify yourself.
Again, only YOU can do the work of truly typing yourself.

How do I find my wing?
Finding your Enneagram wing, just like finding your type, takes a deeper dive into reading and honesty with yourself. Start by identifying your basic Enneagram type (read more here) and then look at the two number types adjacent to your basic type on the Enneagram diagram.
I recommend reading through each of those possible wing types thoroughly and try to identify yourself within those types. Pay close attention to what desires, motivations, and fears you most relate to within that wing type. You may find that you have characteristics of both wings however, you will be more dominant in one wing type.
One of my favorite places for more reading is The Enneagram Institute
I am a 7w6 and it took me a while to figure out both my basic type and my wing type. I can’t encourage you enough to really dig deep and do the reading. Don’t depend solely on a quiz or the fun Enneagram memes/descriptors. Use this tool to really help you grow!
If you know your type and wing I’d love to hear it below in the comments!
